At the other end, you\u2019ll most likely find the rest of us.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cIt\u2019s all about the choices we make in our day-to-day lives that can have even just small impacts on the environment,\u201d says David Mahony, HIP V. HYPE\u2019s head of Better Buildings. \u201cMaking small choices about reducing the energy that we use, reducing our waste, saving water \u2013 ultimately having an impact on the planet and the changing climate.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">While anyone can make sustainable change, moving house is a good time to start. It can be a bit like a New Year\u2019s resolution, wiping the slate clean and forming new habits. Join today.<\/span><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Reduce consumption<\/span><\/h2>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Whether you\u2019re contemplating appliances to match your new kitchen or just doing the weekly shop, it might be time to stop and reflect on your buying habits. Do you need brand new items or could these be sourced second-hand or even borrowed?<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cA good example is toy libraries,\u201d Mahony says. \u201cWe use one here in Carlton where it\u2019s a free service, you go in and you grab five toys, bring them home for a month or two months and bring them back and change them over for some new ones.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Repair cafes \u2013 where items are mended or fixed by volunteers \u2013 are another great alternative to buying new.<\/span><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Dispose of organic waste correctly<\/span><\/h2>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">It might seem innocuous but getting rid of organic waste can have dramatic effects.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cWhen you send green waste, food waste, anything organic to landfill, it undergoes a chemical reaction that produces methane,\u201d Mahony says. \u201cMethane is actually almost 25 times more harmful than carbon dioxide.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Mahony\u2019s solution: green waste bins. If you fancy going one step further, moving house is a great time to start composting.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cA compost bin is a great option,\u201d Mahony says. \u201cHave one on your balcony or out in the backyard and then use that on the garden as a really nutrient-rich, organic fertiliser.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Consider transport alternative<\/span><\/h2>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Cars are big carbon emitters and while Mahony isn\u2019t suggesting you crush yours into a cube tomorrow, it\u2019s good to use alternatives where appropriate.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cRide your bike, jump on a tram, avoid using the car for short local trips,\u201d Mahony says. \u201cIf you have the means and capacity, look at buying an EV or a hybrid vehicle. And tap into car-share schemes, e-bikes and e-scooters \u2013 there\u2019s so much of that available.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Green your home<\/span><\/h2>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Plants can have endless environmental benefits, both in the garden and indoors. Growing vegetables or herbs \u2013 even in tiny, balcony spaces \u2013 reduces food miles. If you\u2019ve never flexed your green thumb, a new house is a great time to try.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cHerbs are a great one to start with,\u201d Mahony says. \u201cThyme, rosemary, basil, parsley \u2013 they\u2019re all pretty hardy and can stand the test of time.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Indoor plants can have their own set of benefits and, as a bonus, are a great way to decorate a new space.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cThey reduce volatile organic compounds in the air, [and] they emit oxygen, so they clean your air,\u201d Mahony says.<\/span><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Change your cooling and heating habits<\/span><\/h2>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Air conditioners use huge amounts of energy. If you can, Mahony recommends switching them off and opening a window. If that won\u2019t do the trick, changing the thermostat by just a degree Celsius can make a big difference.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cOne degree saves about 10 per cent of your energy bills associated with heating and cooling,\u201d Mahony says.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">If you\u2019re in the market for new digs, Mahony says that builds such as The Canopy in South Melbourne \u2013 on which HIP V. HYPE is working as a sustainability consultant with developer Gamuda Land on its latest project The Canopy\u2013 are being designed to help residents rely less on energy-intensive cooling and heating.
